Poulsbo (wikipedia)
is a small town at the head of a long narrow inlet (Google
Map) located across Puget Sound from Seattle. It was settled in the
1880s by Norwegian fisherman and farmers drawn by the fjord-like inlet
and the mountains and forests that reminded them so much of their
homeland. Until WWII Norwegian was the primary spoken language, and
Poulsbo's Norwegian heritage is preserved today in its downtown shops,
restaurants, and waterfront marina.
For our day trip we decided to leave the car at home and take the bus
to Seattle. From there we sailed across Puget Sound on the
Seattle-Bainbridge Island ferry then rode the #90 bus to Poulsbo. As
usual, our Orca
smartcards handled all the fares and transfers. And as our photos
show, we were lucky with the weather - it was a gorgeous sunny warm day
- the perfect way to spend our Saturday together.
